La casa abbandonata - The abandoned house

In a street bordered by dignified yet unassuming houses, where all gardens are well kept and offer the passers by the view and the smell of multicoloured flowers and the plesant shadow of trees with thick foliages, the presence of an abandoned house, marked by time and negligence and surrounded by vegetation grown untidily, has appeared to me as something full of mistery and uneasiness in a context that is otherwise peaceful and tidy.
I have observed it with curiosity, trying to imagine which might be its story, and at the same time I have noticed certain odd details, like the piers too thin and however covered with stone, the unusually protruding volumes, the unpleasant proportions of the windows, making a whole that with the passing of time hasn't become noble but it has just got old and inexorably out of fashion.
I have thought that maybe it's just its awkward look the reason for its present condition of neglect; one may compare it to a bad tempered lady who at one point has found herself alone and forgotten by all. That's why I've loved to let it become a subject for a watercolour.
The one I have depicted here is the view that appears from the main gate, which I drew standing on the sidewalk and I coloured afterwards at home.

  1. I'm always fascinated by closed up houses, over-run gardens and high walls!
The first thing that struck me was the odd design of this house, from the late 60's early 70's I think?
It must have a story to tell!
I like the way you have included the tangled vegetation.
    You've made me curious too!

  3. La casa abbandonata, a good title for a novel.
Very nice watercolour that render very well that garden claiming back the space.
Congratulation for doing a bilingual blog, I love to read the Italian part and check the English to be sure.

  5. Thank you for your kind comments!
Cathy, I'll try to discover the real story of the house and then let you all know... I guess you are right, the house appears to be made in the late Sixties (besides, all the surrounding area was built in that period).
Dear Benédicte, I've seen your blog and noticed that you have a bilingual blog, too! I've decided to do so to reach as many people as possible and at the same time use my mother tongue to speak to my friends (my first readers) and, in general, to the people of my country.
:-) A presto!
