La cala del Leone

Approfittando della splendida luce e del bel clima di maggio, che anche in presenza di qualche nuvola invogliano a stare il più possibile all’aria aperta, domenica mattina con alcune amiche abbiamo preso l'auto e ci siamo dirette verso il mare.
In poco tempo abbiamo raggiunto Livorno, che dista appena un centinaio di km da Firenze, e da lì, raccogliendo le indicazioni di alcuni abitanti del luogo, abbiamo proseguito verso sud lungo la via Aurelia, che qui si chiama via del Littorale (nobile discendente dell'antica strada romana che ancora oggi come duemila anni fa collega Roma con Pisa e da qui procede verso nord oltrepassando i confini dell'Italia), finché una fila di auto parcheggiate su ambo i lati della strada ci ha rivelato che eravamo arrivate a una delle spiagge preferite dai livornesi: Cala del Leone.
Per raggiungerla, abbiamo percorso il sentiero che scende fra gli alberi e gli arbusti tipici della macchia mediterranea di queste zone, con un ripido tratto finale sulle rocce.
Abbiamo così scoperto questa bellissima caletta, incastonata fra il mare limpido, le rocce e la ferrovia che passa al di sotto della via del Littorale. Verso sud, il verde promontorio dominato dal castello di Sidney Sonnino, importante politico italiano che morì nel 1922 e volle essere sepolto proprio qui, in una grotta a pochi passi dal castello. Questo si trova sul luogo di un antico fortilizio mediceo, che fu fatto ampliare e trasformare dallo stesso Sonnino alla fine dell'Ottocento, quando decise di farne la propria residenza.
Dopo un paio d'ore di piacevole relax sotto un sole insolitamente mite, ho tirato fuori il mio piccolo album da disegno e gli acquerelli e ho cercato di ritrarre questo delizioso paesaggio, al tempo stesso selvaggio e ricco di storia.

Taking advantage of the wonderful light and of the beautiful climate of May, which also with the presence of some clouds make feel like staying in the open air as much as possible, last Sunday morning together with a few friends of mine we took the car and headed for the seaside.

In a little time we reached Leghorn, which is just a hundred kilometers from Florence, and from there, having gathered some advices from the inhabitants of the city, we moved southwards along the via Aurelia, which in this stretch is called via del Littorale (noble descendant of the ancient Roman road that today as two thousand years ago connects Rome with Pisa and from there proceeds northwards getting beyond the borders of Italy), until a row of cars parked along both sides of the road revealed us that we had arrived at one of the beaches that the inhabitants of Leghorn like best: Cala del Leone. To get to the beach, we walked on the path that goes down amid the typical trees and bushes of the maquis of this area, with a steep final part on the rocks.

So we discovered this beatiful caletta (the Tuscan word for "cove") set between the clean sea, the rocks and the railway that passes below Via del Littorale. Southwards,the green promontory dominated by the castle of Sidney Sonnino, prominent Italian politician who died in 1922 and wanted to be buried just here, in a cave situated a short walk to the castle. This stands in the place of an ancient Fortress originally belonging to the Medici family that Sonnino himself had enlarged and transformed at the end of the Nineteenth century, when he decided to go to live there.

After a couple of hours of pleasant relax under an unusually mild sun, I took my small album and my watercolours and tried to portray this lovely landscape, at the same time wild and rich of history.
