Even without knowing anything about the history of this place, the name Rothschild is enough to recall the idea of an immense wealth, and so one doesn't get surprised to find in this corner of the French Riviera, a short way from the exclusive and snobbish town of Cap Ferrat, a villa of utmost elegance surrounded by splendid gardens linked to the name of Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, who made it built in the early Nineteenth century and provided it with furniture and artworks of extraordinary quality.
The villa is not surprising for its size nor for its architecture, which might be defined as an eclectic revival of an Italian Renaissance villa, with reminiscences a bit from Veneto, a bit Florentine, with the addition of motifs inspired by gothic architecture. I was enchanted mainly by the gardens, beautiful and rich in inventiveness in their partition in different areas, each of them with its own theme, and by the interiors, wearing furniture and decorations worthy of a royal house.
And most of all, one can't remain indifferent admiring the views from the villa as well as from the gardens, with the two bays shining in blue placed on each side of the small promontory where the complex was built, leaning towards the Mediterranean sea like the prow of a fairy ship.
