Natale lungo i viali - Christmas along the boulevards

Among all the beautiful things of Christmas time, there's its capacity for transforming the look of the places we are used to, making them become landscapes sparkling with lights.
This is a quality that I've always found enchanting, and that has never stopped to arouse positive thoughts inside of me, first of all for the beautiful memories of Christmas Holidays when I was a child, and then because the child of those times is still inside of me and keeps on getting surprised and fascinated by the fairy, a little childish magic of these lights.
This painting made with oil pastels on coloured paper portrays the Viale Lavagnini, dominated by the huge mass of the so-called Palace of Sleep, in its typical Christmas appearance, with the linden trees now bare covered with small lights, watching motionless the passing of the usual rows of cars; I've made it in one go from a photograph I took two evenings ago, and I show it at once on these pages, I hope still in time to give everybody my best Season's Greetings.

Il sentiero nascosto - The hidden path

From the "walk at Rimaggio" I have been talking about in my previous post, I took a view not at all unusual in an area like this near Bagno a Ripoli, halfway between the city and the country: a narrow road between the trees, flanked by olives and cypresses, winding curvy on the hill.
My friends and I stopped shortly to look at it, but we didn't give in to the impulse of following it: although inviting, it was undoubtedly a road inside a private estate, at whose end we would have maybe found a gate, or a closed door.
So, without further lingering, from here we started walking again.

Il Duomo sotto la neve - The Duomo under the snowfall

It doesn't snow frequently, in Florence; that's why last week, when the whole city found itself under an intense snowfall, everyone looked at the sky, partly fascinated by the changes of the landscape that were outlining a city with a new look and magically silent, partly worried for the possible discomfort that the snow, as always happens in these cases, would have caused. The events demonstrated that there were good reasons to be worried: thousands of people were blocked in the traffic jam along the viali (boulevards), at the train station of Santa Maria Novella where most of the trains were cancelled, in the motorway where the traffic was stopped for hours, and many had to spend the night in their places of work or in hotels or in other places expressly set up, or even inside their cars.
In the afternoon, during the snowfall, I had the opportunity to take some photographs, and I didn't miss this image of the Duomo that seemed to fade in the gloomy sky while the whitened Dome was resembling a gigantic cake covered with a dusting of sugar; from the photo I've made a drawing that I've tried to complete as quickly as possible, favouring my feelings rather than the accuracy of details.

With this image where the Duomo seems to belong more to Heaven that to the earthly world, I give to all my Season's greetings.

After I have seen many interesting portraits in several blogs and also on Flickr, little by little I have started to feel like coming back to this kind of artistic representation. I am talking about coming back because a long time before beginning to study architecture and to paint landscapes my first drawings were mainly portraits.
I have made this small artwork quickly, straight off as much as I could, taking the subject from a black and white photograph found in the web.

La solitudine del Battistero - The solitude of the Battistero

Every time I walk through Piazza San Giovanni, particularly after it has been relieved from traffic, when I'm not in a hurry I stop and look at the Battistero, which always keeps on attracting me with its enigmatic geometry of white and green marbles. Since I have read the pages by Giorgio Manganelli dedicated to this monument, I can't look at it without thinking of his words, always finding some confirmation of their truth. From one intuition by this journalist-writer, sprouted the inspiration for this watercolour:
"Traditionally, the center of Florence is indicated in the system that consists of the Battistero, Santa Maria del Fiore and Giotto's bell tower. (...) If the true center is the Battistero, as it seems to me, the consequence is that, for planning reasons, it doesn't bind with any other element; the Battistero is an absolutely lonely monument".
So, according to me, here is what makes it so fascinating: the fact that it is unique, lonely, somehow incompatible with every other building surrounding it.

The first picture shows the finished watercolour, which I have submitted to the exhibition of la Pergola Arte "Piccolo Formato" 2010 - fifth edition (april, 17-24 2010), while the second one shows the drawing under the watercolour, made on coloured paper, which I have scanned before proceeding with the application of colour.
