During the walk around Rimaggio, near Florence, that I described in some of my previous posts, we met several tabernacles: some of ancient origins, bearing traces of paintings of some interest although heavily damaged by time, others more recent, simple marks of people's devotion without any artistic value.
The tabernacle that I chose to paint, carrying on my experiments with oil pastels, undoubtedly belongs to the latter cathegory, but in its simplicity is something very common and familiar to anyone who usually goes around old cities, villages or country roads.
The tradition of tabernacles is of ancient Roman origin, and derives from the usage of putting small temples along the streets to protect wayfarers.
In Christian age the tradition continued, first with representations of the Virgin Mary, than of the Saints. Tabernacles were used also as points of reference for outdoor preaching, largely widespread during the terrible plague of 1348, in order to avoid crowds of people indoors.
From the Fifteenth Century they started to host precious works by famous artists, and then became more widespread with mass works, like the terracotta or ceramic models produced by the workshops of Donatello and Della Robbia.
Still today, especially in the country, even the more humble tabernacles like the one that I have portrayed are attended and decorated with wild flowers by some pious old lady, and despite the anxious haste that seems to afflict everybody, keep on collecting the prayers of the passers-by, expressed not exclusively with words but also with just a sign of the cross, a thought, a sigh.

Natale lungo i viali - Christmas along the boulevards
Among all the beautiful things of Christmas time, there's its capacity for transforming the look of the places we are used to, making them become landscapes sparkling with lights.
This is a quality that I've always found enchanting, and that has never stopped to arouse positive thoughts inside of me, first of all for the beautiful memories of Christmas Holidays when I was a child, and then because the child of those times is still inside of me and keeps on getting surprised and fascinated by the fairy, a little childish magic of these lights.
This painting made with oil pastels on coloured paper portrays the Viale Lavagnini, dominated by the huge mass of the so-called Palace of Sleep, in its typical Christmas appearance, with the linden trees now bare covered with small lights, watching motionless the passing of the usual rows of cars; I've made it in one go from a photograph I took two evenings ago, and I show it at once on these pages, I hope still in time to give everybody my best Season's Greetings.

Olivi in rosso - Olives in red
Carrying on the walk described in the previous posts, reaching the place named Rosai, getting near the small village of Rimaggio in the surroundings of Florence, I was struck by an unusual image, that I had never seen before, of a group of olives partially covered by the bright red leaves of a Japanese ivy. Due to the late season, the branches in the lower part were already bare, and with their gloomy colours formed an almost dramatic contrast with the red of the leaves.
I found interesting also the play of shadows on the plastered wall bearing the enbankment from which the olives sprang out, and while I was painting this small work with oil pastels I felt like I was deep in an abstract work: I decided that I could take the freedom to weigh colours and arrange lines as I liked, and so I did.

Il sentiero nascosto - The hidden path
From the "walk at Rimaggio" I have been talking about in my previous post, I took a view not at all unusual in an area like this near Bagno a Ripoli, halfway between the city and the country: a narrow road between the trees, flanked by olives and cypresses, winding curvy on the hill.
My friends and I stopped shortly to look at it, but we didn't give in to the impulse of following it: although inviting, it was undoubtedly a road inside a private estate, at whose end we would have maybe found a gate, or a closed door.
So, without further lingering, from here we started walking again.

Passeggiata a Rimaggio - A walk at Rimaggio
Everyone who lives in Florence knows that if one wishes to go for a beautiful walk amidst nature, art and history, just has to arrive at one of the small towns placed on the edge of the city, which despite its expansion have maintained the marks of their history and their identity - remaining like small jewels set on the suburbs born after the postwar period until today - and from there start walking on any street running through the splendid hills of the surroundings of Florence, the same ones that in the city we find with our look every time we raise our eyes over the roofs, the towers, the belfries.
One of these small towns is Bagno a Ripoli, in the southern area of Florence. From here, together with my friends Valentina e Donatella, I went for a walk on a beautiful Sunday afternoon unfortunately become too short after the end of daylight saving time; anyway with the help of my camera I could catch some of the views that excited me, in order to work on them in a series of small studio works using a medium that is unusual to me: oil pastels.
From the centre of Bagno a Ripoli we started walking towards Quarto, whose name, undoubtedly of ancient origin (meaning "Fourth" in Italian), indicates the milestone from Florence, probably on the variant of the old via Cassia (an ancient Roman road) between Florence and Rome. On the sides of the road, olive groves, one of the most widespread cultivations in Tuscan country, for which just in the last weeks the time of harvest has arrived.
Any itinerary on the hills around Florence offers magnificent views of the city, on which the beloved outline of the Dome of Santa Maria del Fiore invariably stands out.
First stop of our walk, the church of Santa Maria a Quarto di Rimaggio, documented since the Thirteenth Century, maybe even dating back before the year One Thousand, although modified by following renovations, whose interior keeps precious frescoes of the Fifteenth Century.

A Venezia - In Venice
On the occasion of the exhibition "Matite in Viaggio" in Mestre, I had the opportunity to go for a walk in the beautiful Venice together with my friends Elisa and Anna. Despite the crowds of tourists filling its lanes, the city keeps its magic of a splendidly dreamlike place, where water is sometimes a background, sometimes a mirror of views that are romantically worn with age.
It isn't necessarily along the ways more travelled by mass tourism that one can find the corners more rich in architectural quality and emotion, but I hadn't been here for so long that I couldn't help going to see piazza San Marco with the Basilica and the Palazzo Ducale, where I was obviously enraptured by the apparition of San Giorgio Maggiore on the homonymous island.
So, while the sun was going down over the horizon, preparing a fiery red sunset, I made this small drawing, that I painted with water-soluble pencils.

Il giardino segreto - The secret garden
In the centre of Florence, every wall, even every building may hide inside an unsuspected garden exclusively reserved to private use, which in many cases may be modest for its dimensions and look, adorned with simple plants and furniture, while in other cases may surprise for its richness made of exotic trees, valuable statues, fountains and other things.
For this reason I always feel intrigued when I see some vegetation appearing through a gate or down a hall.
In this case, it isn't one of the extraordinary palaces of the centre, but a more humble block in the area of the boulevards, yet I found very fascinating the appearance of this garden, so silent and secluded.
If you wish to see other previos posts on the same matter, I give you my advice to look here, and also here and here.

Tramonto suburbano - Suburban sunset
Halfway between the city of Florence and the small towns that today have become its outskirts, there are still several areas which, for their position, can't be considered countryside anymore, but aren't yet a part of the urban area.
So we find uncultivated fields, or occasionally under cultivation, more similar to orchards than to real farms, old farmhouses now looking out of their place for their nearness to the imposing shopping malls and residential districts built in recent years, areas invaded by sheds, spontaneous vegetation, improvised depots.
Among all these symptoms of decay, there are nevertheless some places that, in spite of all, have maintained a tie with their history and through the presence of small cultivations, fruit trees and other signs of human care, tell us how these zones were before the growth of the city made them marginal.
These fields, portrayed under the light of an early July sunset, are a short walk from the tramway, between the shopping mall of Ponte a Greve and the new Saint John of God Hospital.

Il Duomo sotto la neve - The Duomo under the snowfall
![]() |
It doesn't snow frequently, in Florence; that's why last week, when the whole city found itself under an intense snowfall, everyone looked at the sky, partly fascinated by the changes of the landscape that were outlining a city with a new look and magically silent, partly worried for the possible discomfort that the snow, as always happens in these cases, would have caused. The events demonstrated that there were good reasons to be worried: thousands of people were blocked in the traffic jam along the viali (boulevards), at the train station of Santa Maria Novella where most of the trains were cancelled, in the motorway where the traffic was stopped for hours, and many had to spend the night in their places of work or in hotels or in other places expressly set up, or even inside their cars.
In the afternoon, during the snowfall, I had the opportunity to take some photographs, and I didn't miss this image of the Duomo that seemed to fade in the gloomy sky while the whitened Dome was resembling a gigantic cake covered with a dusting of sugar; from the photo I've made a drawing that I've tried to complete as quickly as possible, favouring my feelings rather than the accuracy of details.
With this image where the Duomo seems to belong more to Heaven that to the earthly world, I give to all my Season's greetings.
