Lately I have been dedicating myself mainly to architecture drawings so, with the intention to put myself to test with a different subject, inspired by the theme "public fountains" proposed this week by the Urban Sketchers group on Flick (go to the discussion on Flickr), I have chosen to represent one of the two bronze fountains made by Pietro Tacca between 1627 and 1629 and placed in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata.
Having a very short time each day to dedicate to the sketch, I have come back to the square several times during this week, and each time I have found singular characters and situations: a craftman-artist coming from Sri Lanka who showed me the pictures of some of his works, a restless girl who kept arguing with someone through her mobile phone, filling the square with raging screams, a maintenance man working on the fountains who tried to let a passer-by believe that I was his secretary, and at last a disarranged – and also a bit incoherent – group of students of architecture engaged in a complicated exercise of surveying one of the beautiful loggias of the square.

Pomeriggio d'autunno alla Fortezza - Autumn afternoon at the Fortress
I made the drawing for this watercolour in a warm afternoon of November in the garden of the Fortezza da Basso in Florence. For its position, presently the garden is a sort of island in a sea of cars running along the boulevard surrounding it; anyway the tall trees, the fields and the large basin with the fountain which gives hospitality to many water birds make it a rather pleasant and quiet place. Despite the sunny day, the garden appeared almost deserted; so I could attend my drawing with the greatest peacefulness, accompanied by the clear sound of the fountain.
