La Biblioteca di San Marco - The Library of San Marco

Dietro piazza San Marco, oltre il basso muro che delimita a nord l'antico convento, appare la sagoma dell'elegante, bellissima Biblioteca, costruita fra il 1437 e il 1443 da Michelozzo di Bartolomeo su commissione di Cosimo de' Medici. L'esterno dell'edificio è in sintonia con la semplicità dell'interno, costituito da tre bianche, luminose navate scompartite da due file di colonne in pietra. 

I numerosi motorini parcheggiati lungo il marciapiede, le macchie sul muro, i fili elettrici in vista, i manifesti multicolori sembrano stratagemmi di cui la Biblioteca si serve per passare inosservata e mantenere così, indisturbata, la sua funzione di silenziosa custode dei preziosi codici miniati che da secoli sono conservati al suo interno.

Behind piazza San Marco, over the low wall that borders the northern side of the ancient convent, appears the shape of the elegant, beautiful Library, built between 1437 and 1443 by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo on commission of Cosimo de' Medici. The exterior of the building is in tune with the simplicity of the interior, made of three white, bright aisles divided by two rows of stone columns.

The many scooters parked along the sidewalk, the stains on the wall, the power wires in full view, the colourful posters seem stratagems used by the Library to remain unnoticed and so maintain, undisturbed, its function of silent keeper of the precious illuminated codes that have been preserved inside it for centuries.

il Canto de' Nelli

La mattina di sabato 16 ottobre ho partecipato al mio primo Sketchcrawl nel quartiere di San Lorenzo a Firenze. 

Il primo disegno l'ho realizzato all'interno del complesso di San Lorenzo, dove dal silenzioso chiostro posto a fianco della chiesa è possibile ammirare l'esterno della Biblioteca Laurenziana, progettata e costruita da Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Il secondo disegno mostra invece il vivace, colorato mercato che anima le strade intorno alla chiesa, frequentato soprattutto dai turisti. A Firenze non solo le strade e le piazze hanno un nome, ma talvolta anche gli angoli fra due strade. Questo angolo si chiama, in maniera tipicamente fiorentina, "Canto de' Nelli". In lontananza, si vede la sagoma rossa e verde dell'ottocentesco Mercato Centrale, fatto di ferro e vetro. In primo piano, l'insegna dei vecchi magazzini "La Medicea", ormai chiusi da diversi anni, mi ricorda un modo diverso e superato di fare acquisti, quando eravamo tutti un po' più sobri e forse noiosi nel vestire, e andare per negozi non era considerato particolarmente divertente.

In the morning of Saturday 16th of October I made my first Sketchcrawl in the area of San Lorenzo in Florence.

I made the first drawing inside the complex of San Lorenzo, where from the silent cloister placed beside the church it's possible to admire the external walls of the Laurentian Library, planned and built by Michelangelo Buonarroti.

The second drawing instead shows the lively, colourful market (mainly frequented by tourists) that livens up the streets surrounding the church. In Florence not only streets and squares have a name, but sometimes also the corners between two streets. This corner is named, in a peculiarly Florentine manner, "Canto de' Nelli". In the distance, the red and green shape of the XIX Century Mercato Centrale, made of glass and iron. In the foreground, the sign of the old stores "La Medicea" now closed for many years, reminds me of a different, old fashioned way to do shopping, when we all dressed in a more sober and maybe boring way, and shopping wasn't considered particularly exciting.
