Last Saturday, for the Worldwide Sketchcrawl no. 50 I met with Antonio, Roberto and Tom at the Marino Marini Museum in the center of Florence.
In the peacefulness of this museum, little known and so quiet (except for a small group of nursery school children with their teachers), we sketched with pleasure through all the morning.
It was also a good opportunity to appreciate the artworks of this Tuscan master of the twentieth century, best known for his sculptures of horses with riders, of which in this museum I could discover and admire also the paintings characterized by bright colours and energetic lines.

The Big Draw nel Giardino Corsini

Saturday April, 25, day of Worldwide Sketchcrawl no. 47, was also the day of the event The Big Draw, which for the first time was held inside the beautiful garden of the Corsini Palace, in the centre of Florence.
It was wonderful spending the whole day among a multitude of painters and sketchers, many of them beginners of all ages motivated by great enthusiasm, while in several corners of the garden life drawing and watercolour lessons were held.
On this occasion I tried to experiment with the "classical" technique of watercolour, in which I still have a lot to learn, but in which I immersed myself with commitment and, I must say, with great pleasure.

After many, too many months in which I could only rarely make some sketch and I never managed to find the time to scan, write the descriptions etc., finally today the Worldwide Sketchcrawl no. 43 brought me back to the joy of drawing, painting and sharing sensations and feelings with others.
Together with Sarah, who I met this morning for the first time, we decided to stay in front of the Ponte Vecchio under the vaults of the Vasari Corridor so that we had a shelter from rain and at the same time very interesting views of the bridge and of the buildings that in the area overlook the river.
Despite the bad weather, it was a very pleasant morning, that I spent not only sketching but also talking about watercolour with Sarah, exchanging words with a few curious tourists, chattering with a hawker who - not annoyed at all by the fact that we had stolen part of his space - entertained us with his good humour and with tales of his present life and of his far homeland, in South America.

Sketchcrawl n. 41 fra Ponte Vecchio e San Frediano a Firenze

After a long absence due to the many engagements that stole me the time that I need to scan and comment my sketches (while I have been keeping on sketching also thanks to several beautiful events like the "Lanciano Sketching Days" and the "Bigallo Sketch Contest" of which I'll talk in my next posts), I am coming back to these pages to write about Sketchcrawl no. 41.
The group of the Florentine sketchers, this time larger than usual, gathered at the Ponte Vecchio with the idea of going on sketching in the area of San Frediano, in Oltrarno, but when I arrived, in the early afternoon, many had already left; there were just Claudia and Chiara, with which I made this little watercolour, portraying the back of Borgo San Jacopo seen from the point where the Ponte Santa Trinita comes off the right bank of the river Arno.
A view that I've always loved and admired every time I had been passing through this part of the Lungarno, and that I added to my sketchbook with pleasure and fun.
After I finished my sketch, I stayed with Chiara and together we finished the afternoon with a short walk through the city centre and many chats accompanied by a drink in one of the best known (and undeservedly snobbish) bars of the city centre.

Sketchcrawl n. 39 a Ferrara - Festival Diari di Viaggio

Ferrara - a view of the Castello Estense

Ferrara - view of the Castello Estense with trees

Ferrara - Palazzo dei Diamanti

Ferrara - Palazzo Municipale

On Saturday 13 April, a wonderful sunny day, I took part to the Diari di Viaggio Festival organized in Ferrara by the association Autori Diari di Viaggio.
A beautiful initiative, with the participation of nearly sixty authors of carnet de voyage coming from every part of Italy and even from abroad, in a spirit of feast and entertainment, all intent on sketching through the streets of the city.
This is the series of sketches that I made during the day, all made with pen and water-soluble pencils, portraying several views of this extraordinary city.
At the end f the day, a jury awarded the best carnets: here are the results.
But more than a competition, it has been an exciting meeting between urban sketchers, each with his story and personality, and also a beautiful encounter with a city who welcomed us with curiosity and enthusiasm.

On the occasion of Sketchcrawl no. 38, we decided to gather at the market of Sant'Ambrogio, one of the historical markets of the city together with the Central Market. Being a cold, damp day, we took shelter inside the huge iron structure of the market, which hosts many stands of foodstuffs, especially butchers and delicatessen, as well as a renowned typical trattoria. Here I portrayed one of the butchers, crowded with customers in queue to buy beef steaks, pork loins, sausages and other tasty ingredients which characterize Florentine cooking.
Then, after a short break for a cup of coffee, we decided to face the cold and portray the colourful stands selling fruit and vegetables that are placed outside, under the iron roofings surrounding the building of the market.
Also here, despite the chill, there was a beautiful atmosphere, joyful and lively, I must say very different from the hysterical irritability that in the same hours one usually finds in the big supermarkets of the suburbs.

Sketchcrawl n. 37 alla Libreria Edison - Sketchcrawl no. 37 at the Edison Bookstore

Yesterday October, 13th I gathered with Roberto, Massimo, Cristina and many other sketchers inside the Edison Bookstore in Firenze. The Bookstore is going to close definitely in the next month, an event that have left many usual customers sad and disappointed as this is one of the most beloved places in the city for all those who like books and enjoy meeting their friends here, where one can also eat something or have a cup of coffee at the bar inside the store.
Actually, this is just the latest of many cultural enterprises that have been recently closed: the Le Monnier bookstore, the Libreria Martelli, the Ricordi records shop, the Libreria del Porcellino. There's a rumour around that some agreement has already been made to make the place become an Apple Store, and the thing predictably frightens and gets all the lovers of printed paper horrified.
I feel sorry most af all for the employees of the bookstore, and I don't hide my fear that Florence may end up not only with a number of new jobless people, but also with another place sadly closed and unused.

For the Sketchcrawl no. 36 of last July 14th, together with Roberto, Jukio and Giacomo Filippo we went to sketch in the central area of Florence, near the Cathedral, where the narrow streets of the oldest part of the city give shadow even in the hottest days. We started making our sketches in the little Piazza Santa Elisabetta, dominated by the age-old Torre della Pagliazza. After I made some research, I discovered that the name "palliazza" generally indicated the prison towers, in fact the building was at first used as a women's jail between the Twelfth and the Thirteenth Century, while later it was used as bell tower of a church nearby, now lost. Today it is part of a hotel, but it keeps on drawing to itself the attraction of tourists, who never fail to stop and look at it, intrigued by its history and by its uniqueness in the city, as it's the only tower with a round shaped plan that has survived until today.
In the second sketch I portrayed one of the buildings facing the square, with its characteristic sporti, i.e. wooden cantilevers sustaining the upper protruding part of the building.
Here every building has many stories to tell, and one feels like losing himself after every smallest detail: unfortunately I could dedicate just a couple of hours to the Sketchcrawl, and I was sorry to leave the company too early, when I was still feeling like sketching and I would have liked to have more time to get to know better my fellow sketchers. The only thing I can do is hope in the next time...

Sketchcrawl n. 34 agli Uffizi - Sketchcrawl no. 34 at the Uffizi

For the Sketchcrawl no. 34, yesterday morning Roberto and I met at the Piazzale degli Uffizi, a place that despite its name is something different from a square, being a sort of street-courtyard enclosed on three sides with the wings of the most important museum in the city, which is also one of the best known in the world.
Having little time available I made just one sketch, for which I chose the brightest side of the Piazzale: the one facing the river Arno, embellished by the scenographic loggia attributed to Bernardo Buontalenti.
When I am in front of subjects like these, I'm always torn between the desire of taking all the freedom I can and an impulse to force myself to the highest precision in order to reproduce exactly the shapes and proportions of every single element. Since I can't manage to solve the quarrel, my results always leave a little to be desired, but I haven't given up hope of reaching the right compromise, sooner or later.
Despite the flood of visitors towards the Gallery, the time I spent in the Piazzale  passed in the greatest quietness, while some street-painter placed his easels to sell his works to the tourists and some small group crossed rapidly the space dark for shadow.

30° Sketchcrawl alla Biblioteca delle Oblate - 30th Sketchcrawl at the Library of the Oblate

il Duomo visto dalla caffetteria delle Oblate
The Duomo seen from the Oblate café

the roofs of Florence seen from the newspaper library of the Oblate

Due to the cold weather that afflicts Florence in these days, for this 30th Sketchcrawl we have chosen to gather in the central town library of Florence, based in the ex convent of the Oblate, a short walk from the Duomo.
The choice showed a very good one, since from the café, placed on the second floor, one can see spectacular views of the Dome, imposing symbol of the city, visible also from a distance of many kilometers.
The Dome was designed and carried out between 1418 and 1436 by Filippo Brunelleschi, "revolutionary" architect who marked a turning point from the ancient constructional and aesthetic traditions of the Fourteenth century to the new idiom of Renaissance, which introduced the use of columns and classical orders, proportionality, the geometric control of space.
The view that I've had the opportunity to portray shows a detail that maybe many don't know: the loggia over only one of the sides of the octagon, built by Baccio d'Agnolo between 1513 and 1514, which remained unfinished because of the hard criticism by Michelangelo, who called this work "a cage for crickets".
I made the second drawing on the upper floor, looking outside from one of the windows of the newspaper library, offering a beautiful view of the roofs of the city with their endless variety of dormers, windows, chimneys, altanas.

29° Sketchcrawl nel quartiere di San Lorenzo - 29th Sketchcrawl in the area of San Lorenzo

la Biblioteca Laurenziana
the Laurentian Library

In the morning of Saturday 16th of October I made my first Sketchcrawl in the area of San Lorenzo in Florence.
I made the first drawing inside the complex of San Lorenzo, where from the silent cloister placed beside the church it's possible to admire the external walls of the Laurentian Library, planned and built by Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The second drawing instead shows the lively, colourful market (mainly frequented by tourists) that livens up the streets surrounding the church. In Florence not only streets and squares have a name, but sometimes also the corners between two streets. This corner is named, in a peculiarly Florentine manner, "Canto de' Nelli". In the distance, the red and green shape of the XIX Century Mercato Centrale, made of glass and iron. In the foreground, the sign of the old stores "La Medicea" now closed for many years, reminds me of a different, old fashioned way to do shopping, when we all dressed in a more sober and maybe boring way, and shopping wasn't considered particularly exciting.
You can see other location drawings that I made in the area of San Lorenzo, and in particular the rear of Palazzo Medici, the Osservatorio Ximeniano just in front of the church and the Sacrestia Nuova of San Lorenzo.
