Passeggiata in Oltrarno - A walk in Oltrarno

A few weeks ago, thanks to an initiative of the urban sketcher Claudia Dominguez, who was in Florence for a while, it came out the idea to dedicate an afternoon to a sketchwalk in the area of Oltrarno. Together with Claudia, Donatella, Rita, Robert, Jenny and Sonia I spent pleasant hours sketching at first in an extremely lively piazza Santo Spirito, then in an unusually calm piazza Pitti, already heading towards twilight.

Sketchcrawl n. 39 a Ferrara - Festival Diari di Viaggio

Ferrara - a view of the Castello Estense

Ferrara - view of the Castello Estense with trees

Ferrara - Palazzo dei Diamanti

Ferrara - Palazzo Municipale

On Saturday 13 April, a wonderful sunny day, I took part to the Diari di Viaggio Festival organized in Ferrara by the association Autori Diari di Viaggio.
A beautiful initiative, with the participation of nearly sixty authors of carnet de voyage coming from every part of Italy and even from abroad, in a spirit of feast and entertainment, all intent on sketching through the streets of the city.
This is the series of sketches that I made during the day, all made with pen and water-soluble pencils, portraying several views of this extraordinary city.
At the end f the day, a jury awarded the best carnets: here are the results.
But more than a competition, it has been an exciting meeting between urban sketchers, each with his story and personality, and also a beautiful encounter with a city who welcomed us with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Olivi in Piazza San Giovanni - Olive trees in Piazza San Giovanni

In the past I have already spoken of the Baptistry of Florence, of its enigmatic look, of its obsessive geometry that seems to radiate along invisible lines all over the city.
Last week I heard that on the occasion of the International Biennial of Culture and Environment, Florens 2012, approximately seventy centuries-old olive trees had been arranged in Piazza San Giovanni, putting the Baptistry in the centre of an urban installation.
I asked myself if the olive trees would manage to soften the hardness of this building, sacred yet, as someone wrote, "intellectually terrible".
I went to verify and, trying to portray in a sketch the unusual look of the square I realized that I was still perceiving the Baptistry as ever before, while the olive trees seemed to be captured by its obscure dominant power, like victims of a spell.

Dalla finestra - From the window

(acquerello su carta Acquarello Ruggeri Modir 24,5 x 34,5 cm)

Being under the illusion that I could paint more comfortably, in a warm place, taking shelter from bad weather, I had the idea of portraying the view that I see every day from the window of the room where I work. I have to say that it didn't prove to be a good idea, because the fact of being less than one metre away from my desk influenced me with repeated interruptions that made everything difficult, hard and slow.
Anyway, I'm happy that I stole these minutes from work to depict this secret corner in the heart of Florence, that never fails to amaze those who enter the room for the first time.
In fact this is one of the many private gardens that hide themselves from the passers-by with a bit of arrogance, hardly letting catch a glimpse to the ones who are curious enough to look over the enclosure. Being in a secondary street, the garden enjoys a rare silence, although it's widely used as a parking by the inhabitants of the building.
It's a loved place for me, and these palms, this holm oak are almost friends who stand by me in the good days as well as in the hard ones, with no need of words but just offering me the green warmth of their presence.

Desiderio d'estate - Desire for summer

It has been very cold in the past weeks, so I reluctantly had to suspend my beloved sessions of life drawing. I took advantage of this and resumed a project I had started many months ago but which I had put aside because of my overlapping engagements and ever new inspirations, and yet I had never abandoned completely.
It's a series of watercolours that I intended to dedicate to the banks of my dearest water course: not the Arno, the river where Florence is reflected, but one of its humble tributaries, the Greve (everywhere one finds written il Greve, masculine, while among common people I have always heard calling it la Greve, feminine), who is born on the hills of Chianti and, after it has passed the homonymous town of Greve in Chianti, proceeds northwards, crosses Tavarnuzze, Scandicci and Ugnano and then throws itself into the Arno a little downstream of the city of Florence.
For me it's the river that I used to watch from the window of my class when I was at primary school, one of the favourite places to go for a walk with my friends in the afternoons after the school, the background sometimes joyful sometimes dreadful of many small stories, some real and some pure invention, from the furthest days of my childhood until today.
I had the idea of depicting these banks in a series of paintings on a summer morning, when with my camera I captured dozens of pictures full of memories and emotions, and in these days of late winter, when summer seems a dream, it has been very pleasant submerging myself again in that green and in such light.
The first watercolour of the series is here.

Along the boulevard Filippo Strozzi, having the shape of a "U" surrounding the imposing walls of the Fortezza da Basso, with its beginning and its end at the railway subways, there is one of the testimonies left by the community of Russians, mainly formed by aristocrats, who settled in Florence in the second half of the Nineteenth Century.
It is Villa Basilewsky, born as the residence of the College Counsillor Aleksandr Bazilevskij and of his wife Ol'ga Nikolaevna. When the latter died, their son Petr Aleksandrovič donated the villa for the creation of a hospital to be dedicated to her.
Still today the villa maintains this function, and yet it manages not to reveal it outside, keeping itself tidy, silent, half-hidden by the trees of its unadorned garden.
It doesn't show any kind of elegance, but in the sunny winter afternoon when I portrayed it, its side facing the boulevard was shining with a soft, warm light, covered by the violet blue brushstokes of the shadows of the trees.

Natale lungo i viali - Christmas along the boulevards

Among all the beautiful things of Christmas time, there's its capacity for transforming the look of the places we are used to, making them become landscapes sparkling with lights.
This is a quality that I've always found enchanting, and that has never stopped to arouse positive thoughts inside of me, first of all for the beautiful memories of Christmas Holidays when I was a child, and then because the child of those times is still inside of me and keeps on getting surprised and fascinated by the fairy, a little childish magic of these lights.
This painting made with oil pastels on coloured paper portrays the Viale Lavagnini, dominated by the huge mass of the so-called Palace of Sleep, in its typical Christmas appearance, with the linden trees now bare covered with small lights, watching motionless the passing of the usual rows of cars; I've made it in one go from a photograph I took two evenings ago, and I show it at once on these pages, I hope still in time to give everybody my best Season's Greetings.

Olivi in rosso - Olives in red

Carrying on the walk described in the previous posts, reaching the place named Rosai, getting near the small village of Rimaggio in the surroundings of Florence, I was struck by an unusual image, that I had never seen before, of a group of olives partially covered by the bright red leaves of a Japanese ivy. Due to the late season, the branches in the lower part were already bare, and with their gloomy colours formed an almost dramatic contrast with the red of the leaves.
I found interesting also the play of shadows on the plastered wall bearing the enbankment from which the olives sprang out, and while I was painting this small work with oil pastels I felt like I was deep in an abstract work: I decided that I could take the freedom to weigh colours and arrange lines as I liked, and so I did.

Il sentiero nascosto - The hidden path

From the "walk at Rimaggio" I have been talking about in my previous post, I took a view not at all unusual in an area like this near Bagno a Ripoli, halfway between the city and the country: a narrow road between the trees, flanked by olives and cypresses, winding curvy on the hill.
My friends and I stopped shortly to look at it, but we didn't give in to the impulse of following it: although inviting, it was undoubtedly a road inside a private estate, at whose end we would have maybe found a gate, or a closed door.
So, without further lingering, from here we started walking again.

Il giardino segreto - The secret garden

In the centre of Florence, every wall, even every building may hide inside an unsuspected garden exclusively reserved to private use, which in many cases may be modest for its dimensions and look, adorned with simple plants and furniture, while in other cases may surprise for its richness made of exotic trees, valuable statues, fountains and other things.
For this reason I always feel intrigued when I see some vegetation appearing through a gate or down a hall.
In this case, it isn't one of the extraordinary palaces of the centre, but a more humble block in the area of the boulevards, yet I found very fascinating the appearance of this garden, so silent and secluded.
If you wish to see other previos posts on the same matter, I give you my advice to look here, and also here and here.

Serenità lungo il Mugnone - Serenity along the river Mugnone

It's only natural to look for shadow in sultry afternoons like the ones that have oppressed the city in the last weeks: that's why instead of going towards the city centre I preferred walking along the boulevards that follow the river Mugnone, overshadowed by rows of London planes which, due to the late season, have already started to lose their leaves.
Also this area of the city is among the ones built between the Nineteenth and the Twentieth century, where buildings are bombastic and massive, but can hardly hide their nature of impoverished, not noble descendants of the magnificent palaces of the city centre.
Anyway, in the halls one can see brass plaques refusing the admittance of bycicles or stopping from delivering ads; if someone appears at a window, it's a house servant busy cleaning the glass; if one meets walking dogs, they are kept on a leash by serving men seemingly bored: many details reveal that the inhabitants of this area have a good income and a high regard for themselves.
For this reason, as soon as I saw this small building, so clear and bright, even with flowers at the windows, I chose it for my watercolour as I would have chosen a smiling face among too many serious faces .

La piazza silenziosa - The silent square

I rarely pass through this place and see these large trees and these humble buildings, although this square is a few steps away from the Duomo, in an area where I go quite often.
And yet for several years this square has been the centre of all my activities: here there were many lecture rooms of the Faculty of Architecture where I've studied, attended courses, taken exams; here I've met many people and formed friendships that are still lasting and important.
Nevertheless, I don't like coming back here: the base of Architecture has moved to another place, leaving room to the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy, a short time ago an unpleasant railing was made in order to keep out at night the many drifters who hang around here, and the small bar on the corner where I used to go has closed.
On the whole, there is too little liveliness, too much silence, although small groups of students passing by can still be seen, and the numerous parked cars reveal that many people still live or have their jobs here.
Sitting on a bench that once was not here, I quickly made this drawing, while in my mind images of situations and people I hadn't been thinking of for years appeared again like flashes.
And while I was painting with water-soluble pencils, the brown ink liner that I had used for the drawing, coming in contact with water, became unexpectedly red, as if the years that had passed from the memories of this square had transferred also on my sheet a warm coating of rust.

Il palazzo e la magnolia - The palace and the magnolia

Every time I turn from the large Viale Lavagnini to one of the secondary streets that lead to the historical city centre, I have the sensation of entering a world apart. As soon as the boulevard is behind my back, suddenly silence falls, while I find myself  surrounded by buildings that with their locked front doors and their lifeless windows look like keeping unapproachable secrets.
The rare passers-by seem to be aware of this sense of privateness, and talking to each other or to invisible interlocutors through the telephone, reveal aloud the sorrows and worries that torment them, as if they were inside a booth for confession, forcing me to pretend I'm not hearing.
It's in this intimate and almost suspended mood that I stopped to make this watercolour, letting myself be attracted by the green show of a magnolia placed inside a tiny garden.

On a Sunday of January that was too mild and shining not to go out, together with many Florentines I let myself be attracted by the most obvious and traditional of the possible pastimes: a walk at the park of le Cascine, yet not forgetting paper and watercolours.
I sat on a bench looking towards the footbridge of l'Isolotto, the river Arno on my left and on the right the alley crowded with families with children, elderly couples and sportspeople of every kind deep in running, walking, riding, skating and I started my drawing.
Time passed so fast that while I started to put the first colours, the sky was already showing the first delicate glows of sunset, which reflecting on the trees spread a wonderful light on the landscape.
To be more quick and not let the twilight catch me halfway through my work while I was waiting for the watercolour to dry, I used again the water-soluble pencils, which once again showed to be an effective and rapid medium.
Some children stopped to look at me, admired by the "magic" effect of the pencils becoming painting, and their looks full of interest and warmth made this beautiful winter afternoon even more bright.

Il "Palazzo del Sonno" - The "Palace of Sleep"

In the city it is known as the "Palace of Sleep", its imposing mass dominates the Viale Spartaco Lavagnini in its part that is closer to the Fortezza da Basso. And it's just from the garden of the Fortezza (Fortress) that I chose to make this small watercolour, to let the curtain of trees smooth a little the huge mass of this building, where stays a branch of the State Railways.
For some time, when I've been looking at this palace, I've imagined it as similar to a gigantic ship sailing through time, whose crew is made of those who are seen every day entering the large doors in silence, where probably every act is ruled by rigid procedures, and where maybe there are fantastic, endless archives of drawings of trains and railway works...

Il giardino pensile - The hanging garden

(28/9/2010)].

A short way from the Teatro Comunale, in one of the most elegant areas of the city, amid the roofs something unexpected appears: an incredible garden placed on the top of a building otherwise traditional and austere, from which a few surprising pines stretch out.
It's not unusual to find hotels with a roof garden — in Florence there are many — but this one has something special; maybe it's the fact that it's placed on a building that is not so high, in a context of quite wide streets, conditions that allow to perceive easily from the outside the presence of vegetation and trees.
And then, those trees with their common and familiar appearance give the idea that they have sprouted by chance, like the grass that sometimes one see on the gutters or on the roofs, born from seeds brought by the wind.
[To those who find incredible these pines grown on the roof, I give my advice to take a look at this link to the website of the Hotel Kraft, with the pictures of the hanging garden! (28/9/2010)].

Paesaggio con giovani alberi e ponte pedonale - Landscape with young trees and pedestrian bridge

In the last few weeks I've had the opportunity to spend some time making pleasant walks in the surroundings of my home, going back and exploring places that I hadn't seen for a long time, although they had been the scenery of most of my days in the years of my childhood, particularly in summertime.
This is true only partially for this little park, placed in an area I've been hanging around for a long time in the past, as it is close to what once was my junior high school, but since the park was created only later, in quite recent times, I don't have particular memories that make me hold it dear.
There are no child games, so it is frequented mostly by children in their bicycles or people of every age keen about jogging or gymnastics, as well as by elderly people to go for a walk. Not far from here there is a soccer pitch and, a little further, also a few tennis courts. Streets are far away, so it's a very quiet place.
The pedestrian bridge in the background crosses the river Greve, which has been accompanying me like an old friend in almost all the watercolours of this summer, included the one of the "Abandoned house" (whose mysterious rear side faces the river, a little up stream).

I pini nel giardino della piscina - The pines in the garden of the swimming pool

A few days ago, walking near the municipal swimming pool of Scandicci – something that I hadn't done for a very long time – I was impressed by the large dimension of some Stone Pines standing out behind the hedge that encloses the garden, to such an extent that I had decided in my heart to dedicate them a watercolour at the earliest opportunity.
This morning, walking again near the swimming pool, which is currently closed as there are works in progress inside, I found out that the workers had just finished to cut down one of the pines that had aroused my admiration.
I know that unfortunately this work is necessary, because many trees belonging to this species now represent a danger for people: the day after the snowfall of last December I saw many of them with the big branches fallen down or even with the trunk broken by the weight of the snow.
So, having in my bag a small notebook and a pen, I made a very quick sketch of the row of Stone Pines still remaining along the southern side of the enclosure, thinking that maybe it was my last opportunity to do it.

Autumn in town brings a bit of melancholy but also magnificent colours that for a few weeks light trees and gardens before winter monotony. Always taking inspiration from this theme, as in several of the watercolours that I have made in the last times, I have made this small artwork fascinated by the glow of the declining sun on the yellow leaves of one of the trees adorning Piazza dell'Indipendenza.

Passing through the streets of the town, although far from the obvious attractions of the city centre, it isn't unusual to get struck by a particular component of the scenery. Having time and the right state of mind, it's beautiful to let ourselves be brought into our own vision, imagining that it is something else, or elsewhere. So, from a glance up while I was walking by the trees that skirt one of the torrents of Florence, originated this watercolour, partly descriptive, partly dreamy.
