Years ago, in the pages of a wonderful novel* I found a sentence that I could never forget: a city can love someone.
To be honest, I have never felt myself much loved by my hometown, and in this sense one might say that this blog is a sort of diary of an unrequited love; anyway I think that also in Florence there are places that can make me feel a bit of warmth and that maybe even smile at me.
One of these is the bright, popular piazza dei Ciompi, in the heart of the area of Santa Croce. Here buildings have the spontaneity of housing erected without a precise plan, and with their variety of colours and shapes are the background of a constantly bustling scene, reaching its climax in the small market of old things that has always been filling permanently the centre of the square.
As I couldn't explain why the well proportioned, hyper-rational piazza della Santissima Annunziata every time freezes my heart, nor why piazza d'Azeglio always appears to me haughty and a little unfriendly, so I couldn't say why here I always feel so well.
But there's a possible explanation: maybe this square loves me.

Sketchcrawl n. 37 alla Libreria Edison - Sketchcrawl no. 37 at the Edison Bookstore

Yesterday October, 13th I gathered with Roberto, Massimo, Cristina and many other sketchers inside the Edison Bookstore in Firenze. The Bookstore is going to close definitely in the next month, an event that have left many usual customers sad and disappointed as this is one of the most beloved places in the city for all those who like books and enjoy meeting their friends here, where one can also eat something or have a cup of coffee at the bar inside the store.
Actually, this is just the latest of many cultural enterprises that have been recently closed: the Le Monnier bookstore, the Libreria Martelli, the Ricordi records shop, the Libreria del Porcellino. There's a rumour around that some agreement has already been made to make the place become an Apple Store, and the thing predictably frightens and gets all the lovers of printed paper horrified.
I feel sorry most af all for the employees of the bookstore, and I don't hide my fear that Florence may end up not only with a number of new jobless people, but also with another place sadly closed and unused.

Carnets disegni parole alla mostra Matite in Viaggio - Carnets drawings words at Matite in Viaggio exhibition

From 5 until 21 October some of my watercolours will be at the Matite in Viaggio exhibition in Mestre, together with the works by many wonderful sketchers.
I show here a few small excerpts (in the next weeks I'll present them one by one). It's a series called "Following the Arno from the Indiano to the Renai - Diary of a perfect day along the right bank of the Arno".
...My advice for all the lovers of travel sketchbooks is not to miss this beautiful event!
