Il Ponte all'Indiano - Indiano Bridge

Look, we are near Indiano Bridge, the last of Florence's bridges. It was born boasting of its engineering achievements, but today nobody admires it but for its utility, known only by those who get round by car.
To me it has always inspired tender feelings, reminding me of the story of the Indian prince passing through Florence who suddenly died and whose ashes were spread here, in accordance with the Hindu ritual, at the confluence of two rivers: the Arno and the Mugnone. He was just 21, it was 1870.

Il Consolato Americano sui Lungarni - The U.S. Consulate on the Lungarni

Those who are familiar with me know that to the narrow streets of the ancient city centre of Florence, I prefer wider and brighter places; among these I especially love the Lungarni - the streets flanking the river Arno along both sides, offering enchanting views towards every direction: to the water and the banks covered by grass and plants, to the palaces facing the river, to the hills that surround the city.
This watercolour portrays the view from the Amerigo Vespucci bridge looking northwards, dominated by the imposing outline of he U.S. Consulate, built in 1857 by the architect Giuseppe Poggi for the marquise Manfredi Calcagnini Estense.
The look of the building, inspired by Classicism, that all things considered is quite elegant, contrasts with its actual condition of fortress, isolated and defended from the rest of the city, as it's forbidden to all vehicles to pass or stop along its perimeter, while armed policemen watch every access.
And anyway, from a distance there's a beautiful harmony between the building and everything that surrounds it. In a sunny morning of last summer I was so fascinated by it that I took a photo from which a few weeks ago I made this watercolour which, after several months from that morning, remains as a pleasant memory of a moment of beauty.

La passeggiata - The walk
(matite acquerellabili su carta Canson Montval Aquarelle 24x36 cm)
Come with me. I'll show you the white road that runs along the river Arno and the railway, going through the green corridor, immense back yard of the city, which finishes at i Renai, where the debris brought by the river have formed a rich deposit of sand.
I know you won't tell me that there isn't much to see, or that you don't find it interesting: nobody knows better than you how to find what is beautiful or deserving attention everywhere, even in the middle of a desert, even on a cloudy day like this.

La piena - The flood

This is not a location drawing, nor it has been made from a photo. It's the record of a feeling, and also of an emotion, the one that I felt a few days ago when, passing on the old bridge of Scandicci, I saw the flooding river Greve streaming impetuously in an almost threatening way, like maybe I had never seen before.
The landscape all around is more an invention than a memory, but after all I told myself that it isn't so important, in this case.

Desiderio d'estate - Desire for summer

It has been very cold in the past weeks, so I reluctantly had to suspend my beloved sessions of life drawing. I took advantage of this and resumed a project I had started many months ago but which I had put aside because of my overlapping engagements and ever new inspirations, and yet I had never abandoned completely.
It's a series of watercolours that I intended to dedicate to the banks of my dearest water course: not the Arno, the river where Florence is reflected, but one of its humble tributaries, the Greve (everywhere one finds written il Greve, masculine, while among common people I have always heard calling it la Greve, feminine), who is born on the hills of Chianti and, after it has passed the homonymous town of Greve in Chianti, proceeds northwards, crosses Tavarnuzze, Scandicci and Ugnano and then throws itself into the Arno a little downstream of the city of Florence.
For me it's the river that I used to watch from the window of my class when I was at primary school, one of the favourite places to go for a walk with my friends in the afternoons after the school, the background sometimes joyful sometimes dreadful of many small stories, some real and some pure invention, from the furthest days of my childhood until today.
I had the idea of depicting these banks in a series of paintings on a summer morning, when with my camera I captured dozens of pictures full of memories and emotions, and in these days of late winter, when summer seems a dream, it has been very pleasant submerging myself again in that green and in such light.
The first watercolour of the series is here.

Il Mugnone - The Mugnone
![]() |
Besides the river Arno, which passes through the city and makes the background of its beautiful bridges, there are other small rivers whose presence is more discreet and hidden in intervals, as they sometimes flow under ground for a large part of their course.
Among these there is the Mugnone, which springs from the hills north of Florence and flows into the Arno downstream of the great park of le Cascine, bringing amid the asphalt and the noise of the most busy streets the green of its banks and the calm of the animals living along its course, mostly water birds: little egrets, common moorhens, some mallard.
I made this small watercolour from one of the bridges that cross it, and it was pleasant to stay looking at its almost still waters while in my back the usual coming and going of cars and scooters continued.

Costruzioni lungo il fiume - Buildings along the river
In order to portray this red brick building, I didn't have to go to secluded, almost unknown areas: in fact it is placed along the road that connects Scandicci and Florence, covered by thousands of people every day, near the bridge that crosses the Greve. Unfortunately I must admit that I don't know much about the past of this building, except that once it hosted a mill, while today it appears to be unused, and with its windows resembling big eyes it seems to watch impassively the traffic running and the river silently flowing.
The watercolour was made entirely on location.
Since I have finished the watercolour paper in small sheets for sketching during August, I couldn't buy some new paper because all the stationery stores that I know are closed for the summer holidays (as most of the shops in general), so I had to be content with the sheets made of a smooth and a little too light paper coming from an old drawing book, I have to say not so satisfactory.

Estate lungo il fiume - Summer along the river
The banks of the rivers, even where they touch or cross an urban area, are often a world apart from the city: as soon as one gets there, he forgets asphalt, traffic, concrete and experiences an environment made of aquatic animals, insects, plants and flowers as if one were in the open country.
A few days ago, in a morning flooded with sunlight, I immersed myself in this landscape made of water and vegetation, and suddenly I felt the desire to represent with some watercolours everything that was around me.
Since I didn't feel yet enough experienced in painting landscapes, I had the idea of starting with a small test work, facing at once the difficulties given by an unorthodox view for the absence of strong focal points, the complete exclusion of the sky, the lack of depth of the background, as the look is interrupted by the plants bordering the river with its still, muddy waters.
I can't say that I am particularly satisfied with the result, but I consider it a starting point from which I trust to improve.

Il ponte sulla Greve - The bridge on the Greve
This watercolour depicts a corner of Scandicci that is familiar to anyone who usually walks – or goes fishing – along the banks of the Greve, or simply is in the habit of passing on the bridge represented here in the background, recently named "February 28th Bridge".
The building on the right, recently restored, is dear to me as I am tied to it by many memories, mostly told by my parents who have lived there for some time, many years ago.
It seems that once it was a mill, as testified by the name of the street where it is: "via del Molin Nuovo" (meaning "New Mill Street"), although in my memory it has always been occupied, at least partially, by dwellings on the upper floor and by a repair shop on the ground floor, and then it has been abandoned for many years.
The weir, which forms a pleasant small waterfall, is usually inhabited by a crowd of delightful aquatic animals: ducks, moorhens, coypu, which in these days of great heat seem to prefer to take refuge elsewhere, maybe in some place along the river more generous of shadow.
