Just a few weeks ago the new Piazza dei Ciompi was inaugurated, renewed after moving to another location the ancient and beloved antique market which for many years was the soul of this place.
Now in the middle of the square there is a quiet enclosed garden, not the same thing but I must say that the square is still a beautiful and pleasant place, the ideal location to spend a whole morning drawing with other Urban Sketchers, some Florentines , others coming from far away, together with the members of the lively Florence Drawing Club, all united by the common interest in location drawing and art.

Years ago, in the pages of a wonderful novel* I found a sentence that I could never forget: a city can love someone.
To be honest, I have never felt myself much loved by my hometown, and in this sense one might say that this blog is a sort of diary of an unrequited love; anyway I think that also in Florence there are places that can make me feel a bit of warmth and that maybe even smile at me.
One of these is the bright, popular piazza dei Ciompi, in the heart of the area of Santa Croce. Here buildings have the spontaneity of housing erected without a precise plan, and with their variety of colours and shapes are the background of a constantly bustling scene, reaching its climax in the small market of old things that has always been filling permanently the centre of the square.
As I couldn't explain why the well proportioned, hyper-rational piazza della Santissima Annunziata every time freezes my heart, nor why piazza d'Azeglio always appears to me haughty and a little unfriendly, so I couldn't say why here I always feel so well.
But there's a possible explanation: maybe this square loves me.
