Scambio di disegni (e storie) fra Firenze e Richland nello stato di Washington - Exchanging sketches (and stories) between Firenze and Richland, WA

Ink liner and coloured pencils sketch

Grazie, Lapoynte!

It's amazing the way common interests and passions can bring people close to each other despite the great distance and the fact they belong to different worlds. I discovered this in the last few years through the contacts that I made spontaneously yet never accidentally with a few sketchers that I felt close to me for an affinity which is as true as difficult to define and describe, at least from my point of view.
Between them there's Lapoynte (David Poynter), unique sketcher of the bare and essential landscapes of the eastern part of the state of Washington, which in his sketches become places rich of poetry and colours, scenes that make me think of the desert as a dimension that brings people closer and warms up relationships instead of dividing and separating.
This is the Flickr page where you can admire his works.

Thanks to his idea, this exchange of sketches came to life: he sent me the card here above, in which he portrayed Col Solare Winery, which the Antinori family, of the well known Florentine dinasty producing wine for centuries, built in Benton City.
As for me, I reciprocated with a sketch of the ancient Palazzo Antinori in Firenze, dating back approximately to 1465, still today the headquarter of the renown wine-producing company.
For a very long time I hadn't experienced the magic, beautiful feeling of opening an envelope coming from a far away friend and of finding in a sketch so much significance and emotion condensed in lines and colours, with no need of words. After I lived moments like this I think that yes, despite all the difficulties and obstacles it's still worth keeping on sketching.
Thank you, Lapoynte!

  1. Your painting of the palazzo is gorgeous. I love the softness of the colors and the lines that flow nicely through the composition. It's such a sweet post you wrote, about how one person can change the life of another, even across the miles, and even people whom we have never met face to face... anybody can make a difference to another just by being there. I love that concept!
