Sulla strada di casa - On the way home

Whenever I get to these crossroads, I begin to feel that I'm home. The crossroads have even a name: they are called Il Cantone (The Corner).

On Saturday 13 April, a wonderful sunny day, I took part to the Diari di Viaggio Festival organized in Ferrara by the association Autori Diari di Viaggio.
A beautiful initiative, with the participation of nearly sixty authors of carnet de voyage coming from every part of Italy and even from abroad, in a spirit of feast and entertainment, all intent on sketching through the streets of the city.
This is the series of sketches that I made during the day, all made with pen and water-soluble pencils, portraying several views of this extraordinary city.
At the end f the day, a jury awarded the best carnets: here are the results.
But more than a competition, it has been an exciting meeting between urban sketchers, each with his story and personality, and also a beautiful encounter with a city who welcomed us with curiosity and enthusiasm.

La chiesa di San Giusto - The church of San Giusto
By the look of it, it seems a country church, and surely it was really so originally. Today the small church of San Giusto a Signano hardly gets itself noticed, being in an area dominated by large 1960s blocks, which encircle and nearly strangulate it with their reinforced concrete heights.
Despite its quite shabby look, it's still alive and working, differently from the old and now abandoned parish cinema on the left of the entrance; but for last few decades it has been replaced and relegated to a secondary role by a new ecclesiastical building, larger and modern.
If it were not for the sad gates that make the porch strangely inhospitable, its look wouldn't be so different from how it was when I used to go there with my catechism friends every saturday afternoon, in the years of my childhood.
Thinking of that time, I find again faces and names of people of whom I have now lost sight, and I realize that I'm feeling a bit of nostalgia for some of them.
And yet, after I have turned the corner, the present impose itself again and in a few moments the recollections evoked by the church of San Giusto sink back again in the memory, leaving a light, fleeting sensation, like when one has exchanged a glance or a smile with an old friend encountered in the street.

Scambio di disegni (e storie) fra Firenze e Richland nello stato di Washington - Exchanging sketches (and stories) between Firenze and Richland, WA

| Col Solare Winery in Antinori Road on Red Mountain in Benton City, WA - U.S.

Ink liner and coloured pencils sketch

Grazie, Lapoynte!

It's amazing the way common interests and passions can bring people close to each other despite the great distance and the fact they belong to different worlds. I discovered this in the last few years through the contacts that I made spontaneously yet never accidentally with a few sketchers that I felt close to me for an affinity which is as true as difficult to define and describe, at least from my point of view.
Between them there's Lapoynte (David Poynter), unique sketcher of the bare and essential landscapes of the eastern part of the state of Washington, which in his sketches become places rich of poetry and colours, scenes that make me think of the desert as a dimension that brings people closer and warms up relationships instead of dividing and separating.
This is the Flickr page where you can admire his works.
Thanks to his idea, this exchange of sketches came to life: he sent me the card here above, in which he portrayed Col Solare Winery, which the Antinori family, of the well known Florentine dinasty producing wine for centuries, built in Benton City.
As for me, I reciprocated with a sketch of the ancient Palazzo Antinori in Firenze, dating back approximately to 1465, still today the headquarter of the renown wine-producing company.
For a very long time I hadn't experienced the magic, beautiful feeling of opening an envelope coming from a far away friend and of finding in a sketch so much significance and emotion condensed in lines and colours, with no need of words. After I lived moments like this I think that yes, despite all the difficulties and obstacles it's still worth keeping on sketching.
Thank you, Lapoynte!

Last sunday I woke up with the idea of passing the afternoon sketching - I didn't know where and what was going to be my subject, but certainly I couldn't imagine that in a few hours, after a brief and unexpected exchange of messages, I was going to be in the centre of Florence, in the middle of a hot and sunny day, walking and sketching together with the extraordinary Portoguese sketcher Luís Simões.
It has been an exciting encounter for me: I felt honoured by the possibility to show a few of the most interesting corners of my hometown to a traveller who was getting there for the first time, and at the same time I listened with passion to the tales of his journey that started more than one year ago and is going to bring him to sketch in every part of the world.
This is the web site dedicated to his project.
The place that we chose to stop and sketch together was Piazza della Signoria, where I dedicated my time to portray a detail of a side façade of Palazzo Vecchio, full of interesting variations and irregularities, where the three large windows of the Salone dei Cinquecento stand out.
Everything was so fast and intense that it seemed unreal to me; and the almost surreal encounter between my world made of duties and schedules and the wonderful and somehow stray freedom of Luís gave me a feeling of destabilizing dizziness of which I can still feel the echo, somewhere inside of me.
Thank you, Luís, arrivederci.
