During this last period I find particularly pleasant and also entertaining painting natural landscapes, and fortunately in the outskirts of Florence, also very near the city centre, there are many views on the surrounding hills that may easily represent interesting subjects.
I made this small watercolour sitting on a bench facing the hill of Scandicci Alto, beyond the river Greve, in a warm morning, full of light. Around me, plenty of silence and just a few people passing by: some old ladies walking, some grandparents going with their little grandchildren to the small playing area with the see-saws nearby.
It will be beautiful to remind these moments of slowness and peace when, in a couple of weeks, this break from all my usual activities is expected to end and the pace of my days will completely change.

Estate lungo il fiume - Summer along the river

The banks of the rivers, even where they touch or cross an urban area, are often a world apart from the city: as soon as one gets there, he forgets asphalt, traffic, concrete and experiences an environment made of aquatic animals, insects, plants and flowers as if one were in the open country.
A few days ago, in a morning flooded with sunlight, I immersed myself in this landscape made of water and vegetation, and suddenly I felt the desire to represent with some watercolours everything that was around me.
Since I didn't feel yet enough experienced in painting landscapes, I had the idea of starting with a small test work, facing at once the difficulties given by an unorthodox view for the absence of strong focal points, the complete exclusion of the sky, the lack of depth of the background, as the look is interrupted by the plants bordering the river with its still, muddy waters.
I can't say that I am particularly satisfied with the result, but I consider it a starting point from which I trust to improve.

La mia vecchia scuola elementare - My old primary school

A few days ago, during a short walk I saw again my old primary school. Now it's not a primary school anymore, I think it's used partly as commercial high school, partly as infant school; anyway, in these days it's silent and empty because, like all public schools, it's closed for the Summer holidays.
I have found it a little aged and neglected, but at the windows it still has the light green Venetian blinds that I remember so well and, all things considered, it doesn't appear so changed from the outside.
I remember that inside there was a small rectangular amphitheatre surrounded by a parapet, which for many reasons resembled a swimming pool, in fact we children used to call it just so: "the pool".
In order to "soften" the drawing of this building, a little monotonous as many constructions made with reinforced concrete, I have made this watercolour with the technique on wet paper, keeping the sketchbook inclined to let the water drip creating variable, unpredictable effects.

I pini nel giardino della piscina - The pines in the garden of the swimming pool

A few days ago, walking near the municipal swimming pool of Scandicci – something that I hadn't done for a very long time – I was impressed by the large dimension of some Stone Pines standing out behind the hedge that encloses the garden, to such an extent that I had decided in my heart to dedicate them a watercolour at the earliest opportunity.
This morning, walking again near the swimming pool, which is currently closed as there are works in progress inside, I found out that the workers had just finished to cut down one of the pines that had aroused my admiration.
I know that unfortunately this work is necessary, because many trees belonging to this species now represent a danger for people: the day after the snowfall of last December I saw many of them with the big branches fallen down or even with the trunk broken by the weight of the snow.
So, having in my bag a small notebook and a pen, I made a very quick sketch of the row of Stone Pines still remaining along the southern side of the enclosure, thinking that maybe it was my last opportunity to do it.

Il ponte sulla Greve - The bridge on the Greve

This watercolour depicts a corner of Scandicci that is familiar to anyone who usually walks – or goes fishing – along the banks of the Greve, or simply is in the habit of passing on the bridge represented here in the background, recently named "February 28th Bridge".
The building on the right, recently restored, is dear to me as I am tied to it by many memories, mostly told by my parents who have lived there for some time, many years ago.
It seems that once it was a mill, as testified by the name of the street where it is: "via del Molin Nuovo" (meaning "New Mill Street"), although in my memory it has always been occupied, at least partially, by dwellings on the upper floor and by a repair shop on the ground floor, and then it has been abandoned for many years.
The weir, which forms a pleasant small waterfall, is usually inhabited by a crowd of delightful aquatic animals: ducks, moorhens, coypu, which in these days of great heat seem to prefer to take refuge elsewhere, maybe in some place along the river more generous of shadow.
