May is the month when it's easiest to love Florence. Going to the Rose Garden, open just in this month, and lose oneself in the perfumed and colourful brightness of its flowers, enjoying an unique view of the city, is an incomparable joy.
I went there with Rita on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, with the clear intent to sketch. Soon we discovered that we weren't alone: here and there we saw several sketchbooks and even canvases and easels.
So these two small watercolours came to life, describing the garden and the goldfish tank, covered with water-lilies still waiting to blossom.

Under a sky that time after time let light drops of spring rain fall, I spent a very pleasant May Day in the country, in the northern area of Chianti, dedicating my time to these watercolours in a magnificent silence just made of calls of birds, barking of dogs in the distance, croaking of frogs from a small lake nearby.

Sulla strada di casa - On the way home

Whenever I get to these crossroads, I begin to feel that I'm home. The crossroads have even a name: they are called Il Cantone (The Corner).

Sketchcrawl n. 39 a Ferrara - Festival Diari di Viaggio

Ferrara - a view of the Castello Estense

Ferrara - view of the Castello Estense with trees

Ferrara - Palazzo dei Diamanti

Ferrara - Palazzo Municipale

On Saturday 13 April, a wonderful sunny day, I took part to the Diari di Viaggio Festival organized in Ferrara by the association Autori Diari di Viaggio.
A beautiful initiative, with the participation of nearly sixty authors of carnet de voyage coming from every part of Italy and even from abroad, in a spirit of feast and entertainment, all intent on sketching through the streets of the city.
This is the series of sketches that I made during the day, all made with pen and water-soluble pencils, portraying several views of this extraordinary city.
At the end f the day, a jury awarded the best carnets: here are the results.
But more than a competition, it has been an exciting meeting between urban sketchers, each with his story and personality, and also a beautiful encounter with a city who welcomed us with curiosity and enthusiasm.

La chiesa di San Giusto - The church of San Giusto

By the look of it, it seems a country church, and surely it was really so originally. Today the small church of San Giusto a Signano hardly gets itself noticed, being in an area dominated by large 1960s blocks, which encircle and nearly strangulate it with their reinforced concrete heights.
Despite its quite shabby look, it's still alive and working, differently from the old and now abandoned parish cinema on the left of the entrance; but for last few decades it has been replaced and relegated to a secondary role by a new ecclesiastical building, larger and modern.
If it were not for the sad gates that make the porch strangely inhospitable, its look wouldn't be so different from how it was when I used to go there with my catechism friends every saturday afternoon, in the years of my childhood.
Thinking of that time, I find again faces and names of people of whom I have now lost sight, and I realize that I'm feeling a bit of nostalgia for some of them.
And yet, after I have turned the corner, the present impose itself again and in a few moments the recollections evoked by the church of San Giusto sink back again in the memory, leaving a light, fleeting sensation, like when one has exchanged a glance or a smile with an old friend encountered in the street.
