After I have seen many interesting portraits in several blogs and also on Flickr, little by little I have started to feel like coming back to this kind of artistic representation. I am talking about coming back because a long time before beginning to study architecture and to paint landscapes my first drawings were mainly portraits.
I have made this small artwork quickly, straight off as much as I could, taking the subject from a black and white photograph found in the web.

Cielo d'estate - Summer sky
Today, in the early morning, looking out of my balcony I felt like I was in front of a wonderful scene.
At nine a.m. it was already hot, but being on Sunday, the streets were pleasantly silent: from the balcony I could hear the words of the few passers-by who had come out to accompany their dogs or just to go for a stroll before temperature became too high. The colour of the sky was so intense to let think that the sea was near (while it's at least one hundred km away), all the colours appeared brightened by an enchanting sunlight, so I couldn't help making this little, fast watercolour, as a way to take note of these beautiful, sweet feelings.

La chiesa e il quartiere di San Lorenzo - The church and the area of San Lorenzo
The area of San Lorenzo with its lively market, with more tourists than Florentines hanging around, attracts me every time I am looking for sounds, voices and colours which may distract me, at least for a while, from everyday thoughts and worries. Also the church of San Lorenzo used to be one of my favourite destinations during my walks, until an entrance fee has been introduced, making short, improvised visit not so convenient.
The outside of the church, although it hasn't a façade, is interesting for the combination of volumes that are different in shape and height: the aisles, the chapels, the domes. The one that can be seen in this watercolour is the dome of the Sagrestia Nuova by Michelangelo, wonderful architecture that contains some sculpture masterpieces, also made by Michelangelo: the tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici with the statues of the Day, the Night, the Dawn and the Twilight. I have wished to represent also the houses and palaces of this area, with their sincere simplicity.
I have made this watercolour in a few days, resuming it day by day, but always during lunch time, drawing and painting while tourists coming from many parts of the world, sitting beside me, were allowing themselves a pause in the shadow to eat, rest, smoke a cigarette, sometimes sleep.

I have been wishing for quite a long time to dedicate a watercolour to Palazzo Medici, but I had always delayed this intention for fear that this building would make me feel uncomfortable and lead me to an excessively meticulous, rigorous, cold work. So, when a few days ago I decided to cope with it, I forced myself not to look for a faithful representation of its proportions and its architectural details, and for this reason I choose as drawing medium the sanguine, which being coarse-grained doesn't go along with precision. Thanks to this method, the making of this sketch has been quick and, I must say, also entertaining.
I have represented only a portion of the Palazzo, belonging to the original XV Century block, made built by Cosimo il Vecchio de' Medici by his usual architect, Michelozzo di Bartolomeo. As is well known, in the second half of the XVII Century the Palazzo was enlarged for the initiative of the following owners, the Riccardi family.

Vecchie case di Scandicci - Old houses of Scandicci
Recently in Scandicci, as happens in many large or small cities, an old factory has been demolished in order to give place to new and modern dwellings.
Walking through the streets of the new district, I've had the opportunity to discover unusual points of view on everything around, and particularly on the back side of some old houses, until a short time before facing the wall that surrounded the factory, which impressed me with its many chimneys, aerials, waste pipes, verandas and other small volumes protruding from the façades, apparently assembled in a spontaneous and disordered way.
Passing here one feels as an intruder, having the feeling that what once was an internal and private space now has become public, visible by everyone, and anyway one can't help but trying to imagine what there might be behind each small window or under each of these small roofs.
