La Biblioteca di San Marco - The Library of San Marco

Dietro piazza San Marco, oltre il basso muro che delimita a nord l'antico convento, appare la sagoma dell'elegante, bellissima Biblioteca, costruita fra il 1437 e il 1443 da Michelozzo di Bartolomeo su commissione di Cosimo de' Medici. L'esterno dell'edificio è in sintonia con la semplicità dell'interno, costituito da tre bianche, luminose navate scompartite da due file di colonne in pietra. 

I numerosi motorini parcheggiati lungo il marciapiede, le macchie sul muro, i fili elettrici in vista, i manifesti multicolori sembrano stratagemmi di cui la Biblioteca si serve per passare inosservata e mantenere così, indisturbata, la sua funzione di silenziosa custode dei preziosi codici miniati che da secoli sono conservati al suo interno.

Behind piazza San Marco, over the low wall that borders the northern side of the ancient convent, appears the shape of the elegant, beautiful Library, built between 1437 and 1443 by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo on commission of Cosimo de' Medici. The exterior of the building is in tune with the simplicity of the interior, made of three white, bright aisles divided by two rows of stone columns.

The many scooters parked along the sidewalk, the stains on the wall, the power wires in full view, the colourful posters seem stratagems used by the Library to remain unnoticed and so maintain, undisturbed, its function of silent keeper of the precious illuminated codes that have been preserved inside it for centuries.

il Canto de' Nelli

La mattina di sabato 16 ottobre ho partecipato al mio primo Sketchcrawl nel quartiere di San Lorenzo a Firenze. 

Il primo disegno l'ho realizzato all'interno del complesso di San Lorenzo, dove dal silenzioso chiostro posto a fianco della chiesa è possibile ammirare l'esterno della Biblioteca Laurenziana, progettata e costruita da Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Il secondo disegno mostra invece il vivace, colorato mercato che anima le strade intorno alla chiesa, frequentato soprattutto dai turisti. A Firenze non solo le strade e le piazze hanno un nome, ma talvolta anche gli angoli fra due strade. Questo angolo si chiama, in maniera tipicamente fiorentina, "Canto de' Nelli". In lontananza, si vede la sagoma rossa e verde dell'ottocentesco Mercato Centrale, fatto di ferro e vetro. In primo piano, l'insegna dei vecchi magazzini "La Medicea", ormai chiusi da diversi anni, mi ricorda un modo diverso e superato di fare acquisti, quando eravamo tutti un po' più sobri e forse noiosi nel vestire, e andare per negozi non era considerato particolarmente divertente.

In the morning of Saturday 16th of October I made my first Sketchcrawl in the area of San Lorenzo in Florence.

I made the first drawing inside the complex of San Lorenzo, where from the silent cloister placed beside the church it's possible to admire the external walls of the Laurentian Library, planned and built by Michelangelo Buonarroti.

The second drawing instead shows the lively, colourful market (mainly frequented by tourists) that livens up the streets surrounding the church. In Florence not only streets and squares have a name, but sometimes also the corners between two streets. This corner is named, in a peculiarly Florentine manner, "Canto de' Nelli". In the distance, the red and green shape of the XIX Century Mercato Centrale, made of glass and iron. In the foreground, the sign of the old stores "La Medicea" now closed for many years, reminds me of a different, old fashioned way to do shopping, when we all dressed in a more sober and maybe boring way, and shopping wasn't considered particularly exciting.

You can see other location drawings that I made in the area of San Lorenzo, and in particular the rear of Palazzo Medici, the Osservatorio Ximeniano just in front of the church and the Sacrestia Nuova of San Lorenzo.

Il Casino della Livia

Questa settimana sono tornata a disegnare in piazza San Marco, dove si trova un'altra costruzione che da tempo avevo in animo di ritrarre: il cosiddetto "Casino della Livia" ispirato dall'architettura di Bernardo Buontalenti anche se in realtà realizzato dal meno noto architetto Bernardo Fallani nel 1775.

Il nome deriva dal fatto che, dopo essere stata sede di un ufficio granducale, la palazzina diventò la residenza dell'attrice Livia Malfatti Raimondi, amica del granduca Pietro Leopoldo.

Alla base del muro alla destra dell'edificio, sulla stessa panca di via dove mi trovavo la settimana scorsa mentre dipingevo la facciata di San Marco, c'era un senzatetto con intorno a sé il suo corredo di borse e sacchetti, anche lui come me seduto in silenzio ad osservare la piazza.

This week I came back to sketch in Piazza San Marco, where there is another building that I have had in mind to portrait for a long time: the so-called "Casino della Livia", inspired by the architecture of Bernardo Buontalenti, even if it was actually built by the less known architect Bernardo Fallani in 1775.

The name derives from the fact that, after being the seat of an office of the Grand Duchy, the small palace became the home of the actress Livia Malfatti Raimondi, friend of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo.

At the foot of the wall on the right of the building, on the same panca di via where I sat last week while I was painting the façade of San Marco, there was a homeless with his equipment of bags and shoppers around him, just like me sitting in silence, observing the square.

La chiesa di San Marco - The church of San Marco

Il convento di San Marco, che occupa un intero isolato nel centro di Firenze, ha origini molto antiche, anche se il suo aspetto attuale è dovuto principalmente all'importante ristrutturazione che subì nella prima metà del Quattrocento. La chiesa, rimaneggiata al suo interno più volte nei secoli, si contraddistingue per la sua facciata settecentesca, ornata di statue e bassorilievi.
La piazza antistante la chiesa è oggi così caotica, soprattutto per il continuo passaggio di autobus e taxi, che difficilmente la facciata riesce ad attirare gli sguardi dei passanti.
Per disegnarla ho scelto un punto di vista laterale, approfittando della presenza di una comoda panca di via, e per essere veloce e concisa ho usato la matita a carboncino e poi l'acquerello.
Nonostante il rumore e il viavai di persone ho lavorato con grande tranquillità, disegnando mentre cominciava a piovere e dipingendo in un altro giorno sotto un sole caldissimo.
Circa un anno fa, all'incirca dallo stesso punto, disegnai una veduta della piazza.


The Convent of San Marco, which stands in an entire city block in the centre of Florence, has ancient origins, although its current shape is mainly due to the important renovation that it underwent in the first half of the XV century. The church, whose interior has been modified several times through the centuries, is characterized by its XVIII century façade, decorated with statues and bas-reliefs.
The square in front of the church nowadays is so chaotic, most of all because of the continuous passage of buses and taxis, that the façade can hardly attract the  eyes of the people passing by.
In order to draw it, I chose a lateral point of view, taking advantage of the presence of a panca di via, and to be quick and concise I used charcoal pencil and then watercolour.
Despite the noise and the coming and going of many people, I worked with great peacefulness, drawing while the rain was beginning and painting in another day under a very hot sun.
Nearly one year ago, approximately from the same point, I draw a view of the square.

Il raduno degli Urban Sketchers Italy a Treviso - The meeting of the Urban Sketchers Italy in Treviso

Ho trascorso l'ultimo fine settimana a Treviso, dove ho avuto l'opportunità di partecipare a una serie di eventi collegati al Comic Book Festival 2010; fra questi la splendida mostra Carnet de Voyage e il raduno degli Urban Sketchers Italy.

In occasione di quest'ultimo, per la prima volta ho provato l'emozione di sentirmi parte di un gruppo unito dall'interesse comune per gli schizzi dal vero, e con grande entusiasmo mi sono impegnata nella realizzazione di questi due acquerelli: il primo eseguito lungo uno dei canali che circondano la Pescheria, il secondo in piazza Sant'Andrea.

(Ne ho fatti anche alcuni altri, li pubblicherò fra breve tempo).

Mi sono divertita moltissimo, ed è stato molto bello anche poter sfogliare gli sketchbooks degli altri disegnatori e ascoltare i loro racconti circa le tecniche, i procedimenti usati, i piccoli trucchi per ottenere gli effetti migliori.

Vorrei quindi ringraziare tutti, e in particolare vorrei rivolgere un grazie speciale ad Andrea Longhi, senza il quale non avrei mai potuto prendere parte a tutto questo!

I spent the last weekend in Treviso, where I had the opportunity to participate to several events connected to the Comic Book Festival 2010; among these, the wonderful exhibition Carnet de Voyage and the meeting of Urban Sketchers Italy.

On the occasion of the latter, for the first time I had the feeling of being part of a group united by the common interest in location drawings, and with great enthusiasm I engaged myself in the making of these two watercolours: the first 

was made along one of the canals surrounding the Pescheria, the second in Piazza Sant'Andrea.

(I also made some other sketches, I'll post them in a short time).

I enjoyed myself so much, and it was really beautiful to flip through the pages of the other sketchers' books and listen to their tales regarding techniques, proceedings, the little tricks to obtain the best effects.

So I would like to thank everyone, and in particular I would like to give a special thank you to Andrea Longhi, without whom I couldn't ever take part to all this!
