The Nineteenth Century Florence is rich of odd and sometimes surprising episodes, among which we might include also the Holy Trinity Church, built from 1890 on the initiative of the Anglo-Florentine community on the place where already stood a previous Anglican church.
The charge was assigned to a Scottish architect, George Frederick Bodley, skilled in building churches and noted representative of the Gothic Revival, very popular in England in those years.
For the last few decades the church has passed to the Waldensian community, but it has maintained its look inspired by medieval architecture, altough it appears to me more close to a fairy-tale age of knights, magicians and princesses than to the real Middle Ages that are still palpable in certain ancient buildings of the city centre.
I made this drawing standing on one side of the street along the church, while none of the rare passers-by seemed to notice my presence.

Ercole e il leone - Hercules and the lion

I love walking along the Lungarni of Florence, as they are the place in the city where there is the most beautiful light.
Among the corners that I have elected as my favourite ones during my walks there is Piazza Ognissanti, in which center there is this bronze work made in 1935 by the Florentine sculptor Romano Romanelli: "Hercules Struggling With The Lion". I like it because it isn't a monument celebrating a winning hero, but represents the moment of the struggle with all its tension, when it's still uncertain who of the two fighters is going to win.

Una gita a Rimini - A trip to Rimini

Nearly ten days ago I went to Rimini with two friends of mine to see the beautiful exhibition "da Rembrandt a Gauguin a Picasso - L'incanto della pittura" (for those who are curious: follow this link).
It was a good opportunity not only to spend a day with a cheerful company, enjoying an early spring sun, but also to discover the beautiful things of this small town that is known by many just for the beaches always crowded in summertime and for the discos attracting nightclubbers from every part of Italy.
The queue for the exhibition was very long, this gave me the opportunity to take advantage of the delay to make a quick sketch of a view of Castel Sismondo, the castle built in the XV century to do the will of Sigismondo Malatesta, whose construction maybe involved also Filippo Brunelleschi.

Lately I have been dedicating myself mainly to architecture drawings so, with the intention to put myself to test with a different subject, inspired by the theme "public fountains" proposed this week by the Urban Sketchers group on Flick (go to the discussion on Flickr), I have chosen to represent one of the two bronze fountains made by Pietro Tacca between 1627 and 1629 and placed in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata.
Having a very short time each day to dedicate to the sketch, I have come back to the square several times during this week, and each time I have found singular characters and situations: a craftman-artist coming from Sri Lanka who showed me the pictures of some of his works, a restless girl who kept arguing with someone through her mobile phone, filling the square with raging screams, a maintenance man working on the fountains who tried to let a passer-by believe that I was his secretary, and at last a disarranged – and also a bit incoherent – group of students of architecture engaged in a complicated exercise of surveying one of the beautiful loggias of the square.

The day I made this sketch I had been uncertain for quite a long time about the subject I could choose for a watercolour. It seemed to me that none of the ideas I had in my mind was in tune with my mood, until, in a central yet almost deserted street, I found myself in front of this bell tower, belonging to the Church of Santi Michele e Gaetano. It impressed me for its harmonious proportions, for the fine outline of the curves connecting it to the lower contiguous buildings and, most of all, for the undefined colour of its walls, which in the late afternoon made it look like a transparent object, suspended in an unreal twilight.
